April 7, 2009 |
| Letter from the Director |
|
Although St. Mary’s has changed over the
years, our current students share many of the experiences that we had when we
were students. The drive around the Route 5 bend to get a first glimpse of the
St. Mary’s River is a memory that few will ever forget. Today, students
still greet you as you walk past and professors continue to leave their doors
open for anyone who wishes to stop by with a question or to just say hello. On
nice days, the Garden of Remembrance and Church Point still remain popular destinations
for students to watch the sunset; and it’s still advised to keep an eye out for wayward frisbees.
Despite these similarities, it is not difficult
to see that the school has evolved. In recent years, we have witnessed a gradual
increase in the number of students, new buildings on campus, changes in the core
curriculum, and more social and academic opportunities for our students. Although
these improvements have helped propel St. Mary’s to the top of the national
rankings and enhanced the educational experience that our current students enjoy,
I know that some alumni find change a bit intimidating.
The information we provide through SMCMail, the Mulberry Tree, and our web
site are intended to keep you informed of the changes, so you don’t feel
alienated from the college you knew. We also discovered how important it is for
you to see the news through the views of our current students. For this, I am
proud to share the new online version of our student newspaper, The Point News. This newspaper is produced bi-monthly throughout
the school year and will be featured in our future SMCMail editions. Hopefully,
this publication, combined with our alumni news, will help keep you well connected
with the St. Mary’s of today.
Enjoy,
Dave Sushinsky ‘02

Relations and Planned Giving

St.
Mary's Senior Featured in Sports Illustrated |
|
When the April 6 edition of Sports Illustrated
hits newsstands next week, you may spot a familiar face as you flip through the
magazine as senior women’s lacrosse midfielder, Lauren Carrier, is
one of six athletes featured in SI’s “Faces in the Crowd.”
Carrier’s recognition in SI
is a result of her breaking the NCAA Division III women’s lacrosse record
for consecutive games with at least one goal. On March 5, Carrier surpassed
the old mark of 45 set by the University of Scranton’s Liz Baumbach from
March 28, 2001, to May 10, 2003, with three goals in a win over Washington College.
She continues to bolster her NCAA Division III record as the streak currently
stands at 54, which includes her five-goal performance in a loss at No. 4 The
College of New Jersey on Sunday. Carrier started the streak as a freshman
on April 15, 2006, in a loss to the University of Mary Washington.
With Carrier at the helm of St. Mary’s
high-powered offense, the Seahawks are third in the nation in points with 245
through 12 games. St. Mary’s is currently ranked 18th in Division III with a 9-3 record.

Have a Favorite
Teacher or Staff Member at St. Mary's? |
|
Last November, over 130 alumni met at Regional
Food & Drink (R.F.D) in Washington, D.C., to partake in a post-election analysis
by professors Michael Cain, Sahar Shafqat, and Todd Eberly. The
alumni in attendance seemed to really enjoy catching up with their former teachers,
so instead of waiting for another election, we want to go again this year! However,
this time we want to open our invitation to all the professors and staff at St.
Mary’s and we need your help. Tell us whom you would like to see at the
event this year and we will extend a special invitation to them. Even if they
have left St. Mary’s, we will try and track them down.
The date of the event is Thursday, November 12, at R.F.D.
and owner and St. Mary’s alumnus, Josh Alexander ’02, has offered
to provide drink specials for all alumni and guests at this event. Send us an
e-mail and let us know
what professors and staff you wish to invite.

Celebrate Maryland's
375th Birthday in 2009 |
|
This is a monumental year for the State of Maryland. To mark this anniversary,
the River Concert Series season opener on June 19 and 20 will feature the Chesapeake
Orchestra. Jeffrey Silberschlag, music director, celebrates the 375th with the
world premier of a symphonic work "In Terra Maryland" by Maryland composer Nathan
Lincoln-DeCusatis with spoken texts culled from early writings on Maryland's founding
prepared by Jennifer Cognard-Black, associate professor of English. Maestro Silberschlag
says: "This work attempts to tell about the arrival of the English colonists and
their thrill of seeing Maryland for the first time." The weekend concerts also
includes Handel's "Trumpet Spectacular" and Dvorak's Symphony No. 9 - "The New World."
This is just one of many events to celebrate the
birth of Maryland. Visit the “Celebrate 375” web site for additional information
on events, discounts, and more.
