| Letter from the Director |

“If
you wait ‘til the last minute, it only takes a minute to do!”
A recent alum and good friend of mine, Thomas
Brewer ’05, used to tackle his end of the semester work with this motto.
Although he successfully graduated despite this unconventional approach to his
studies, every year at this time I find many other students like Thomas torn between
finishing up their work and enjoying the weather outside. With less than a week
to go, who can really focus on studying for finals and working on take-home exams
when there is Frisbee golf to be played and a waterfront stocked with sailboats and kayaks?
While our entrance to the “real world”
presents new challenges, when we return to St. Mary’s as alumni, we no longer
have to struggle with balancing our work and play. We discover a completely stress-free
environment void of papers, senior projects, and all-night study sessions. With
Reunion only a month away, this is your ideal opportunity to have the on-campus
social experience that you probably longed for as a student. Just imagine –
an entire weekend with your friends without the thought of work ruining your social obligations!

Mark June 12 -14 on your summer calendar to “Return
to the Riverfront” at St. Mary’s. With less than a month to register
and two housing options fully booked already (Lewis Quad six & 14-person suites),
this is not the time to apply Thomas’ wisdom to “wait ‘til the
last minute.” Find registration information here.
See you next
month!

| Congratulations, Seniors |
|
On Saturday, May 16, 493 seniors will officially end their wonderful years
of “alumni-in-training” and join the 11,000 members of our Alumni Association.
This year's Commencement speaker is Frank Warren, founder
of the popular web site, PostSecret.com, created in 2005. Viewers anonymously send secrets
to this site that have been causing them guilt, shame, or embarrassment.
Warren explains
that his motive was "to create a place where people could feel free to share their
private hopes, desires, and fears. A place where the secrets they could not tell
their friends and family would be treated with dignity in a non-judgmental way."
The ceremony will start at 10 a.m. on the Townhouse green. All alumni are welcome.

St. Mary's Sailing - Coast to Coast |
|
It’s
probably no surprise to you, but our Seahawk sailors have again qualified to compete
in all three spring national championships (women’s, team racing, and co-ed
dinghies) to be held in California!
ICSA/APS
Team Racing National Championship will run Friday, May 29 – Sunday, May
31 at the Treasure Island Sailing Center in San Francisco. Our sailors would
love to have some fans on the shore. Please join us at our SMCM alumni hospitality
tent to cheer on the sailors Friday, May 29, from 12 to 7 p.m. Paula Mitchell
and Director of Alumni Relations, Dave Sushinsky ’02, are making
the trip to provide snacks and beverages to all alumni and guests who stop by
the hospitality tent to support the team.
If you plan to attend, please RSVP so we may prepare
properly. For directions and more information, click here. If you have any
questions, e-mail Dave Sushinsky
or call 240 895-3381.

| Four Alums
Join the Alumni Council |
|
Members of the Alumni Council held elections for
new members at their second quarterly meeting on Saturday, April 24. We are proud
to announce Brian Briggs ’08, Laurel Eierman ’84, Sean Floyd
’06, and Amanda Walker ’01 as our newest members to the Council.
The St. Mary’s College of Maryland Alumni
Council is the governing body of the Alumni Association. The volunteers that make
up this organization are some of the most dedicated supporters of St. Mary’s
College and spend a great deal of personal time to make sure that the Alumni Association
is well-served by the College. The Council is called upon to make recommendations
concerning a variety of matters that might impact the Association and the College
including publications, fundraising, and special events.
Please join us in welcoming Brian, Laurel, Sean, and Amanda to their new positions.

Beltway Baseball Battle is Brewing |
|
The Orioles and Nationals may not seem to be in any rush to win their divisions,
but both will soon be trying to lay claim to being the best team in the area.
Join us to watch the Baltimore Orioles take on the Washington Nationals at Camden
Yards on Saturday, June 27. Game time is at 7:05 p.m., but all St.
Mary's alumni are invited to the famous Pickles Pub across the street from the stadium
to enjoy drink and food specials starting at 4 p.m.
Note: The first 10,000 fans into the stadium will receive a replica Markakis
BP jersey! Following the game, the Orioles will celebrate an American Classics
Movie Night by showing "Field of Dreams" on the centerfield video board.
The group ticket price is only $15 per person for our outfield bleacher
seats! Because we anticipate such a large group to attend, the Orioles have agreed
to donate $5 of each ticket sold to help fund our alumni scholarship.
Each year, this scholarship benefits eight alumni legacy students at the college.
You must Order Your Tickets by May 31 to get the discount price. Tickets can be picked up at Will
Call on the day of the game. If you have any questions, please e-mail the Office
of Alumni Relations or call us at 240-895-4280.

| Thank You Alumni |
|
51% of the alumni who were reached during the spring phonathon made a pledge
- up 7% from last year! Our alumni have proven yet again that they are willing
to respond when the school needs them most and we are happy to report that our
student-callers raised $70,226.07 in commitments. If you have not made your gift
this year, you still have the opportunity to get your donation in before the close
of our fiscal year on June 30. Please visit our secure online gift form.
